Down on

The McCarthy Farm

Back in 2005, when we first bought the property, the plan was to see how much of our own food we could grow.  We wanted to grow food without chemicals or fossil based energy.  We have found it to be easy to grow food for about three and a half months.  The other eight and a half are more of a challenge.  Food storage and preserving is an important part of the system.  We have learned a lot about growing during the cold months but January and February are pretty lean in the green department.  We are testing having more meat animals year round.  In 2015 we kept a flock of sheep over the winter and 2016 we have kept pigs.

World Wide Organization of Organic Farmer - WWOOF

We had WWOOFers come during the summer of 2015 to help us with projects on the farm.

We build a new greenhouse, pig barn, lamb shelter, more fencing and lots of weeding and

rock moving.
